How to Draw Anime Wolf Girl Step by Step

This tutorial shows how to draw anime wolf girl with animal ears. It includes step by step illustrations and drawing instructions.

There are many variations of animal like characters in anime and manga. This tutorial will focus on drawing a wolf like female anime character.

If you are going to be following this tutorial using pencil and paper be sure to draw light lines that you can easily erase. You will need to do so as you go through the various steps.

Step 1 – Draw the Head

Start by drawing the the head, neck and shoulders.

First make a vertical line line through the middle of your drawing area to help you make sure that both sides of the head/neck/shoulders are equal in width.

You can draw the head by first making a rough circle for it’s top and then projecting the lower portion of the face down from that.

Step 2 – Draw the Ears

Draw the ears fairly long as a large part of them will be covered by the hair in later steps. Make the overall shape of the ears curve outwards from the head and then back towards one another.

You can also add some tiny splits on the ends of the ears to show that they are covered by fur.

Step 3 – Position the Facial Features

Place the facial features as shown in the above example. The proportions used are the same as for most other tutorials here on AnimeOutline.

Draw the eyes just below the the horizontal halfway point of the head. Make the pupils round and with the inner ends of the top eyelids slightly lowered. Draw the top of the pupils slightly covered by the top eyelids and leave some space between them and the bottom eyelids.

The round pupils (unlike the often vertically stretched oval anime pupils) will make the eyes more wolf like.

Draw the nose to one side of the vertical halfway line of the face. Really you are just drawing the outline of the shadow on the side of the nose.

Position the mouth with the bottom lip between the nose and the chin and draw the mouth itself slightly above it in a fairly wide smile. This is optional depending on the kind of character you want but if you look at photos of real wolves their mouths often have a sort of smile like shape. Like the nose the bottom lip will really be just an outline of a shadow this time cast on the chin.

Step 4 – Draw the Hair

To make the character look a little more wild and wolf like draw somewhat messy hair in large clumps.

To make the drawing process a bit easier to understand you can break the hair down into three parts. The front (red), sides (green) and back (blue).

Start by drawing the front section, then draw the sides and finally the back.

Erase the parts of the head and ears covered by the hair after you are done drawing it.

Step 5 – Draw the Ear Fluff

To make the ears look a little more interesting and wolf like add some fur/fluff sticking out of them. Draw the fur in random sized clumps pointing in slightly different directions.

Step 6 – Draw the Details of the Face

At this stage you should have a pretty much finished basic outline of the character so you can move on to some of the smaller details.

Add the inner parts of the eyes such as the pupils, highlights and shadows/reflections

You can also add some fairly large and bushy eyelashes around the eyes.

Finally add a few lines to the eyebrows to give a hint of their individual hairs. This will again make the character appear a little more like a wolf by making the eyebrows look more like fur.

You can also fill the tiny bottom lip shadow with a solid black.

Step 7 – Finish the Line Drawing

To finish the line drawing add the collar bones and a hint of the clothes. In this case the clothes will be lined with fur to again emphasize the wolf like character.

To draw this fur you can pretty much outline it with a set of random zigzags. Try and draw these with some light curves.

Step 8 – Apply Color

You can color the character with whatever colors you prefer but for this example we will go with grey for the ears and a blue (with a bit of grey in it) for the hair/eyes/eyebrows.

Wolves are often grey in color and tend to be associated with winter snow covered woods, the blue hair color will help emphasize this.

If coloring on paper leave the highlight in the hair (shown in the next step) white and fill the rest of the hair and eyebrow with one solid color. If coloring digitally you can add the highlights in afterwards.

Keep the highlights in the eyes white and fill in the non-shaded areas with color.

When coloring the ears make the insides slightly darker than the outsides. For this step keep the ear fluff white.

Step 9 – Add Shading & Finish the Drawing

To finish the drawing add some basic shadow in places where they are most likely to be. You can also add some grey inside the ear fluff to act as both shadows and color patterns of the fur.

Add the other shadow in the following areas:

Drop shadows on the forehead and around the face from the hair
Shadows on the top areas of the white of the eyes (cast by the eyelashes)
Tiny shadow to one side of the nose (outlined in earlier steps, simply fill it with a darker color)
Large shadow on the inner part of the “back hair”
Shadow on the neck cast by the head

Conclusion

The focus of this tutorial was on creating a wolf like anime looking female character by giving her some wolf like characteristics. Of course there are nearly countless other ways to draw a wolf girls. Some anime and manga characters are simply given wolf or other animal ears and have no other features that resemble a wolf while other are drawn with more animal like features.
